We'Re joined now by the republican senator john hoeven from the state of north dakota's on the agriculture, nutrition and forestry committee, and this is an issue i know senator that you've done a lot of work on. Let me start you with jeff's reporting, they're surveying farmers in the state of illinois. Are you hearing similar things and north dakota from people you talk to that? Maybe patience is ...
wearing a little thin right. I mean i talked to farmers and ranchers across the country. It'S a tough time for him in agriculture, no question about it, but they very much want better trade deals with china with japan. Obviously they want the u. s. mca approved with canada andmexico, so they want better trade deals. The tough thing is getting there and, of course that's why we're working on the assistance all right tell us about that, and we hear it's coming out tomorrow. That was a package last year was a 12 billion right. Is this one gon na be 15 billion? What do you know about it? Well again, the white house will make that announcement. Obviously i've been working on it, but that's the range that the president has indicated so far.

We have a meeting, as you know, tomorrow, with farmers we've been hard at work on it and it will build on what we did in the first round, but had some things aswell to try to improve on what we did, such as well. We'Re looking at a number of areas, not only the market facilitation payment, but doing more to help with trade assistance, to try to open new markets and and again, as the president has said, purchases for distribution, and is that, because you think, schools that kind of thing. This is going to go on for all this is going to drag on for a while. Is that how you see it? Well, we had hope that the administration would get an agreement in principle with china week before last, and so we were hoping. We wouldn't need a second round, but now they're delaying the negotiations andthey're targeting our farmers, and so this is not only about assisting our farmers but showing the chinese that we're going to stick to this and and were determined to get better trade agreements. Yes, you one kind of philosophical or ideological question about that as a republican senator. If is it difficult to defend a policy where you have no higher taxes put in place, which would tariffs really are, then the retaliation for that hurts people in this country and then a bailout which is essentially what this has been is put in place to help Those people who are caught and then what would you say if it was a democratic administration doing that thing? Well, that'sit. We don't want tariffs we want to. We want free and fair trade and our farmers every single day go out there and they produce the highest quality, lowest cost food supply in the world that benefits every single american every single day, and so, at the end of the day, they can compete with anybody Right this, this is about getting rid of tariffs and trade barriers, and enabling are you confident that will happen or that things been permanently changed in terms of how the us and trying to do business, i believe well, connell. I believe it will happen. The tough thing is getting through the negotiating and getting there well, you said it. It hasbeen, tough good to see you senator thanks for coming on.

As always,.
