We chose gratitude burgers times, 20 19 person of the year. She has become incredibly quickly the biggest voice on the biggest issue facing the planet. It really is an extraordinary rise. 1415 months ago she was a solo protester with a hand-painted sign. Today she leads a worldwide movement, 7 million people on climate strikes in september in the americas now in europe, with with massive crowds of ...
strikers, and she has really become a galvanizing force for this issue, taking it from behind the curtain to center stage other powerful thing To us about greta is that she represents a broader generational shift in the culture that we're seeing from the campuses of hong kong to the protestsin chile, to parkland florida, where the students marched against gun, violence and and greta has cited them as an inspiration for her. This is a phenomenon we're really seeing all over the world, as young people rebel against the the reality that in many ways the world they're inheriting is not going to serve them nearly as well as it has served their forebears. The way person of the year works is every year in the early fall beginning of october. We have a staff wide meeting members, the staff make nominations and we discuss them and - and it's really it's not only the beginning of a process to select a person of the year. It'S also just afascinating way to think about the year and who shaped it over. The months we we launched five or six contenders big reporting projects where teams go out and and really tell the story of these influencers. What their year was like how they came to acquire the the role they had in the year, what they did with the impact that they had and in the in the final days we we choose, one of them in the past, we've had what we've called runners-up, We'Ll choose a person a year and then we'll have five or six runners-up this year. We did it a little differently, because we have this process where we're thinking about the year inthis dynamic way.

In terms of who shaped it, we decided to focus on. In addition to the single choice, doing reporting about highlighting individuals who shaped their individual field, so we had a business person of the year for the first time who is bob iger, the ceo of disney who's, an extraordinary year with disney, plus and and acquiring fox and Multiple billion dollar plus films, we also chose the u. s. women's soccer team as athlete of the year. What an amazing story, a performance they had on the field, was so inspiring, but their persistence off the field and demanding equal pay and inspiring. So many millions of people. All over with, with their vision of abetter, fairer world, we chose lizzo as as the entertainer of the year and without a doubt i think the the you know captured the year in culture, not just because she has been nominated from our grammys than any other performer. This year, but because her message just resonated and then finally, we chose guardians of the year when we chose to focus on the impeachment drama and particularly on the what we called the public servants. We focus on the whistleblower and and more than a dozen other public servants who, throughout 2019 long before the ukraine events became public, were reporting to their supervisors. What they had seen, and so we chose them as guardians of theyear, for their courage and taking a lot of risks to come forward against a lot of resistance. We always try to choose someone who is who's going to have an enduring influence who's? Who represents something or as part of something that is going to continue into 2020? So in that sense gratitude berg is very much of 2020 and, and you know that a movement is, is only gaining steam. We'Re just beginning to see the impact of the club at the climate debate and politics we're seeing corporations increasingly make make commitments and, of course, pietschmann is going to play out in 2020 and i think the real impact of the public servants.

We highlighted and allthe players in in the impeachment story well, will we're likely to know the results of that, not in the immediate near future, but november 3rd 2020.
